I suffer from panic attacks, and have a huge fear of rain/thunder storms. I can cope with the attacks, because I know that they will end, and a new day will begin. Tonite, we are expecting some bad weather. I cannot go online, or shower (this is what usually calms me) during this, so what are some things I can do? I always feel nauseas and have diahrea when my anxiety is high. If I take bonine and imodium a.d., will that help? What are some techniques that calm you? I have 4 small children, so I must be calm, but alert. Thanks all.

You sound like I was about 3 years ago. I still fear storms sometimes but not as bad. I take Lexapro and it helps me. The storms are not as bad as I usually fear. Find an activity to do with your children like a board game or sing and dance, just try to have fun. Don't listen to people who say psychiatrist ruin your life. This is a real, sometimes serious problem. It was ruining my life by not getting the help I needed. Storms were not the only fears I had. It is terrible to live this way. Just remember, you cannot do anything about it, the storm will pass, try to be in the safest part of your house, say a prayer, God will take care of you. God doesn't give us a feeling of fear, He wants us happy! God Bless and Take Care!

I have panic attacks as well. I take Effexor and it helps alot. I also think that finding something to help take your mind off of it works wonders. I do lots of different things when I need to calm down, such as, crocheting, knitting and bead work. Crafts just really help me loads. Singing also helps me. Maybe you could sing with your kids.

Oh I know the feeling. I also have high anxiety, and have panic attacks often and I'm only 19. Sometimes I can't even stand, my arms and legs just go numb, it's crazy.

But maybe you coudl read a book, or watch a funny movie with your kids, keep your mind off of things.

    And remember, to breathe!!!

Make sure that you have plenty of flash lights and candles. I suffer from panic attacks also (although mine are not related to rain and thunderstorms), and usually doing something constructive with my family helps(like playing a game, or reading [by candle light or a flash light if there is no power]). It also helps to have another adult around to help during these attacks. Just keep telling yourself that everything will be okay once the storm has calmed. Try to concetrate on something else and just make sure that you are completely prepared.

I have a variety of herbal teas that soothe my troubled mind. Among my favorites are a chamomile, mint, hibiscus blend and a honey, chamomile, vanilla blend.

Yoga, other exercise (maybe a brisk walk before the weather hits?), focused breathing, and/or meditation are also on my to-try list when I'm anxious or stressed.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

If nothing works, another of my strategies is to curl up in my favorite chair or in bed with a good book.

If relaxation techniques don't work, frenzied, distracting activity may work for you instead. Sometimes keeping busy is all that's necessary.

    I don't know. Good luck.

If you want a non-medication answer, here you go:
Make Camomile tea, or use the essential oil.
When you feel the Panic attack coming, place your feet firmly on the ground, (it is called grounding) and repeat that you are safe, you are OK.
Feel whatever is beneath your hands, the texture, focus on it.
Try not to anticipate the anxiety, if you fear the Panic attack that makes it worse.
And breathing. Take in a deep breath to the count of 6, let it out to the count of 3.

This takes some practice, but it does help.

For axniety of that severity were physical symptoms show up medication is the best answer. So get your phonebook and find a psychietrist. (Note: Going to psychietrist does not mean your crazy, I go to one myself and I am normal) If all other medications don't work try Xanax! I use to have panic attacks too but Xanax did wonders for me. When I took it, it made me feel invincible to irrational fears like as if I could stand up and conquer it. It even made me able to laugh at my own fears and anxieties! Also try cognitive therapy, it basicaly is when a therepist teaches you to use rational logic to overcome irrational fear. But try Xanax first to stop the physical symptoms.
